Seasonal Work
The main Kiwifruit season starts around early March each year, and then depending on the volume of fruit will finish some time in June. After that there’s what we call the ‘repack season’ which is where we pack fruit that’s been stored in our chillers. That usually starts at the end of June and continues till November.

We’ve got two sites to choose from. Most people will choose the one closest to where they live, where it’s easiest for them to get a ride too or where their friends and whānau work.

We’ve got pleanty of jobs to choose from!
- Fruit Grader – manually sorting fruit based on physical characteristics like size, colour, and shape.
- Packer – packing fruit into various sized boxes.
- Stacker – moving packed kiwifruit boxes from packing line onto pallets – this is probably the most physical of all jobs in the packhouse!
- Tray Prep – preparing kiwifruit packaging for the packing line.
- Forklift and Trolley Operators – Requires current Forklift License. Experience is preferred but not a must!
There are also some more specialised jobs too, so make sure you keep an eye out for our available jobs.
Before you apply for seasonal work at DMS make sure you’re 16 and over with current ID, you’re a permanent resident (or have a valid work visa) and you have an IRD number and NZ bank account.

We have our orchards teams set up in Te Puna, Te Puke and Gisborne, where we do require a boost to our staff numbers at different times of the year to get critical jobs done.
- December to January – fruit thinning/summer pruning.
- March to June – harvest auditing and fruit checking.
- June to October – winter pruning.
- October – flower thinning.
- November – flower picking for pollen.
Seasonal Work
We’re no longer looking for 2023 seasonal staff – our team’s got this season covered. Let’s hope the sun shines so we can finish picking and packing our grower’s fruit. Thanks team!

At DMS we like to make sure everyone feels welcome and that their work day is a happy experience. With so many staff coming back year after year there’s always lots of familiar faces, and because we’re growing there’s plenty of new ones too.
When you work with us you get treated like family, with support when you need, heaps of laughs and of course the flexibility to choose the shifts that suit you best. If you want to stick around for longer there’s even more work from July to October where we repack stored fruit before it gets sent overseas.
The Details
- 2023 Kiwifruit seasonal starting pay rate is $24.00 (plus 8% holiday pay); with additional pay for nights, weekends and some of the specialised roles.
- Milestone gifts throughout the season.
- Regular prize draws – choose from a pool of prizes.
We have four shift choices (start and end times can vary slightly):
- Day shift runs for around 7.5 hours.
- Afternoon shift is four hours only.
- For longer day time hours you can combine Day and Afternoon for a 12-hour shift.
- Night shift is longer hours, 9.5 hours, to ensure you get the biggest bang for your commitment to the nights.
All shifts can pack up to six days a week and we would love you to join us for all packing days, however if there are days you can’t work we’ll try to work around it as best we can.

All of our jobs require you to be on your feet for a long period of time, some are more physical than others and some require some specialised skills – let us know what you’re interested in and we’ll try to match you up as best we can.
- Packer – to pack our lovely kiwifruit into various types and sizes of boxes.
- Stacker – lifting boxes from the packing line onto pallets, you’ll need to be comfortable lifting up to 20kg at a time and lifting above your head.
- Strapper – Let the strapping machine do the heavy work, but you’ll be working at a steady pace to keep up with the pace of packing.
- Team Leaders/Supervisors for different sections
- Forklift Operator – requires Forklift License and some experience in busy environment preferred.
- Bin Tip Operator – mechanical aptitude required, operating the bin tip to load bins of fruit onto the conveyer system for processing.
- Fruit Grader – long periods of standing and concentration required.
- Quality Controller – sample and monitor our fruit and packing process to ensure compliance with relevant standards and best return to our growers.
- Tray Preparation – carefully prepare our boxes before the fruit gets packed into them.
- EAN Operator – this is the data person, so you’ll need to be computer savvy and happy with administration.
We also have our own onsite canteens that provide yummy food to our team; so, if food prep is your thing, you can also come and join in as Canteen Assistant.
Our drug and alcohol policy – To ensure the safety of all of our team, our high-risk roles will require you to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test. We also do post-incident, random, reasonable cause and search and surveillance testing.
